Last week I talked about the fat you can't see. This week, I want to connect the dots: what that fat can mean for your liver and your blood sugar.

Fatty liver and insulin resistance can build for years without a single symptom. Most people feel completely fine right up until a lab result says otherwise.

Here's the connection I keep coming back to. Visceral fat, the kind that sits around your organs, isn't just sitting there. It's metabolically active, and it's associated with more fat building up in the liver, a body that's less responsive to insulin, and blood sugar that gets harder to manage. That's the road a lot of people are on with fatty liver and insulin resistance, and it tends to be a quiet one.

Your labs and your provider are how you find out where you stand, and nothing replaces that. But a lab draw is a snapshot, and there can be months between snapshots. What I wanted was the movie: a daily trend line in between. For me, that's the Hume Pod and the Hume app. To be clear, it doesn't measure your blood sugar and it doesn't diagnose anything. It's one tool that sits next to your labs, not in place of them. (Quick heads up: we earn a commission if you use our code.)

Why the Hume Pod Is the Trend Line I Actually Watch

One number I watch closely is metabolic age. It pulls your body composition together and shows how your metabolism is tracking compared to your actual age. When I first started, mine read 44. Lately it's been reading 40. I don't treat that as a trophy. It's feedback, and it's an estimate from an at-home device, so I read it as a trend over time, not a verdict.

  • ✅ A daily body-composition trend line to look at between lab draws

  • ✅ Visceral fat and metabolic age in one place, alongside the rest of your body composition numbers

  • ✅ Easy to set next to your recent labs and bring to your provider

  • ✅ A tracking tool, not a diagnostic one: your labs and provider still do that part

🎁 YOU COULD WIN A HUME POD. NEXT WEEK.

I'm giving one away. Pod or Band 2.0, your pick, in partnership with Hume Health. Part three drops next week, and that's where I show you exactly how to get in. Want a head start? Follow Hume Health on Instagram so you don't miss it.

The Hume Pod body composition scale

Here's your homework this week.

If you have recent labs, put them next to your pod numbers. Are your visceral fat and metabolic age moving in a direction you'd like to see? If not, that's a great conversation to have with your provider.
